Translation Methodology

Pursuant to EuroVoc license agreement 2012-COP-309, the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI), in collaboration with the Secretariat of European Affairs of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia (SEP) and with financial support of the Swiss Confederation through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), submitted the Macedonian translation of the EuroVoc Thesaurus (Version 4.4) to the EU Publication Office in Luxembourg by email on December 31, 2012. NDI also sent the Macedonian edition on CD-ROM via DHL to Pascale Berteloot, Head of Unit, Legal and Documentary Issues, Consolidation and Copyright Unit, Copyright/Licenses, Pre-litigation and Legal Issues Section of the Publications Office of the European Union.

With support and oversight by NDI, the Macedonian translation was prepared by a working group of three lawyers, three linguists and an ICT specialist. Then, the descriptors and non-descriptors and scope notes were reviewed by an Editorial Board composed of representatives from the SEP and the Chair of the Department of Macedonian and South Slavic Languages in the Faculty of Philology, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University.

The Macedonian translation of the EuroVoc 4.4 submitted in XML has:

  • Descriptors (USE): 6,883
  • Non-Descriptors (UF): 12,791
  • Scope Notes (SN): 11

On May 31, 2013, the SEP and NDI organized a half-day national conference to present the EuroVoc translation to all interested parties, including relevant state institutions, civil society and academia. Conference speakers included:

  • Dr. Fatmir Besimi, Deputy Prime Minister, Secretariat for European Affairs, Government of the Republic of Macedonia
  • H.E. Mr. Stefano Lazzarotto, Ambassador, Embassy of Switzerland in Republic of Macedonia;
  • Ms Christine Laaboudi-Spoiden, Publications Office of the European Union; and,
